This can result the leech regurgitating into the wound and causing infection much worse than the leech bite itself. ![]() NOTE: Is it generally not advised to attempt removing a leech by burning with a cigarette applying mosquito repellent, shampoo, or salt or pulling at the leech. It will not take longer than 20 minutes for the leech to give up and remove itself safely. You can gently pull the leech off push your finger against the sucker and gently roll it away. If you can continue hiking with the thought of a small Dracula hanging off your body do so. Do not panic, leech bites are harmless, no diseases will be passed. The bite of tiger leech is sharp & painful (like 10 mosquitoes bite you on same spot). The commonly used techniques of burning, salting and squeezing result in the leech vomiting harmful bacteria back into your system. The Tiger Leech can extend its body more than 6cm long, while Brown (ground) Leech is much more smaller, only about 2 cm. Most times, the host might not be aware of a leech bit till it drops due to the anesthetics it secretes as it bites. It detects movement around its habitat, swims to the host, attaches its sucker to the body part, and sucks blood until it’s full before dropping off. ![]() In case the leech has already got you, do not pull it out. Leech bites are not harmful, but some species’ bites can be painful. At the moment I can't find good sources for this, only: I have heard that if you do not remove the leech until it gets full and naturally drops off that you will not bleed much, and that it is safer because you reduce the risk of infection.
